Maternal and child health remains a major global challenge, especially during the critical periods of preconception, pregnancy, childbirth, and early childhood. These stages offer important opportunities to improve the health and survival of both mothers and children. Globally, about 2.3 million newborns die each year, with nearly half of these deaths occurring within the first 28 days of life.
In Uganda, maternal and child health outcomes remain concerning. The country has a maternal mortality rate of 189 deaths per 100,000 live births, and only 60% of women complete the recommended four antenatal care visits. Child health challenges are also significant, with an under-five mortality rate of 40.5 deaths per 1,000 live births. Malnutrition further affects child survival, with nearly one-third of children under five stunted and over 268,000 suffering from wasting.
To address these challenges, a comprehensive approach that monitors the continuum of care—from preconception through pregnancy, childbirth, infancy, and early childhood—is essential.
Through research and innovation, the Mayuge Institute of Global Health Research and Innovation works to generate evidence and develop sustainable solutions that improve maternal and child health outcomes in Uganda and beyond.
Together, we can generate evidence, strengthen health systems, and save lives. Whether you're a researcher, donor, or implementing partner — let's create lasting impact.
